For a woman who defined glamour, reinvention, and timeless allure, it’s only fitting that Marilyn Monroe would inspire a celebration as bold, joyful, and unforgettable as the desert city she once escaped to.

This past weekend, Palm Springs didn’t just celebrate Monroe’s 100th birthday, it made history.

What began as a simple idea over dinner evolved into a global phenomenon. Organizer Max Dirdah envisioned gathering as many Marilyn look a likes as possible to honor the screen legend’s centennial.

On this past Saturday, May 30, that vision became reality in spectacular fashion as 1,037 Marilyn’s assembled in downtown Palm Springs, officially setting a new Guinness World Records record.

The setting could not have been more iconic. Beneath Forever Marilyn, the towering sculpture by Seward Johnson capturing Monroe’s unforgettable pose from The Seven Year Itch, a sea of platinum wigs and white halter dresses shimmered under the desert sun.

The result was both surreal and deeply moving: a living, breathing tribute to a woman whose legacy continues to this day.

Dirdah said, “Honestly, I never imagined it would grow to this scale. What started as a simple idea has evolved into something far bigger than I could have envisioned, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how many people it has touched and brought together.”

Participants came from across the country and around the world. Some drove for hours. Others flew in from as far as Australia and India, drawn by the chance to be part of something historic.

But beyond the numbers, what made “Marilyn 100” extraordinary was its diversity.

The crowd reflected the spirit of both Monroe and Palm Springs itself: inclusive, expressive, and unapologetically vibrant. LGBTQ+ participants, families, retirees, teenagers, couples, and solo travelers all took part, each bringing their own interpretation of Marilyn to life.

For many, the connection was personal. “This was always her escape,” said one local attendee, clutching a Marilyn themed handbag, a small but meaningful tribute to the star whose ties to Palm Springs run deep.

Thanks to Palm Springs Pride, participants were outfitted with the essentials: blonde wigs and the signature white dress. From there, individuality took over.

Marilyn inspired accessories filled the crowd, handbags, jewelry, umbrellas ,while legendary impersonator Shelley Michelle ensured there was no shortage of bold red lipstick, adding the finishing touch to thousands of smiles.

For a moment, the boundaries between icon and admirer blurred. Each participant wasn’t just dressed as Marilyn, they embodied a version.

More than six decades after her passing, Marilyn Monroe remains one of the most recognizable figures in the world. But in Palm Springs, her presence feels especially alive.

The city has long claimed her as one of its own, and the feeling, it seems, was mutual.

This celebration proved that Monroe’s legacy isn’t frozen in black and white film or vintage photographs. It lives on in people, in how they see her, connect with her, and reinterpret her.

And on this extraordinary weekend, it lived on in 1,037 of them at once.

The impact extended far beyond the Coachella Valley. The event captured global attention, with coverage spanning television networks and publications across continents.

For Palm Springs, it was more than a record breaking moment, it was a reminder of the city’s unique ability to turn nostalgia into something vibrant and new.

For Marilyn, it was something even more fitting, a standing ovation, 100 years in the making.
