Desert X has unveiled the lineup for its highly anticipated 2025 exhibition, set to take place from March 8 to May 11 across the Coachella Valley. The site-specific art biennial, now in its fifth edition, will feature 11 artists from around the world, exploring themes of Indigenous futurism, environmental change, and the impact of human activity on the desert landscape.
Curated by Neville Wakefield and Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas, Desert X 2025 aims to reframe ideas of wilderness through works that blend material, architectural, and ephemeral forms. Participating artists include Sanford Biggers, Agnes Denes, Kimsooja, and Jose Dávila, among others, each presenting installations that engage with the region’s history, ecology, and cultural narratives.
“Desert X continues to be a platform for artists to explore the evolving relationship between humans and nature” said Wakefield. “This year’s works address pressing global issues while remaining deeply connected to the unique desert environment.”
Highlighted installations include The Living Pyramid by Agnes Denes, a monumental structure planted with native vegetation, and Adobe Oasis by Ronald Rael, a 3D-printed mud structure reimagining traditional earthen building techniques. Sanford Biggers’s Unsui (Mirror) features towering sequined sculptures inspired by Buddhist philosophy, while Cannupa Hanska Luger’s G.H.O.S.T. Ride presents a futuristic nomadic caravan envisioning sustainable, land-based Indigenous communities.
Desert X is free to the public, with installation maps available starting March 8 at desertx.org. The exhibition is supported by sponsors including 1800® Tequila and the National Endowment for the Arts.
