Italica: A Chic Italian Gem in Downtown Indio

Nestled in the burgeoning landscape of downtown Indio, Italica emerges as a beacon of modern Italian cuisine, harmoniously blending the charm of its decor with the sophistication of its offerings. Adjacent to its sibling establishment, The Tap Room—both of which share a kitchen—the restaurant is marked by a shiny silver doorway and a door mat with the logo, Once you step through, a vibrant and chic world unfolds.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Roman, the owner and partner of Italica. By day, Roman is a well-regarded attorney who has served the Valley for over two decades, while by night, he indulges his long-held passion for Italian cuisine. His partner, Skip Paige, the co-owner of the popular Little Bar in Palm Desert, brings his own unique flair to the venture. Paige, formerly an executive at Goldenvoice, the powerhouse behind the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Their combined enthusiasm for opening a restaurant in downtown Indio is palpable, and it shows in every detail of Italica.

The restaurants building is leased from the city of Indio and inside exudes a contemporary yet cozy ambiance. Roman has designed every detail himself and I must say has impeccable taste. The interior boasts dark walls, a striking bar, very modern lighting fixtures, and an array of large black-and-white photographs. On the night of our visit, the establishment buzzed with energy, and maintained a level of sophistication and elegance..

Roman suggested we wait at the bar for our table, but we chose to dine at the bar and indulge in the ambiance, enjoying people-watching as a side benefit. Our evening commenced with an exceptional espresso martini, followed by a robust Italian red that complemented the meal beautifully. The bartender, ever friendly and attentive, enhanced the experience with his skillful service. The music, a hip yet unobtrusive soundtrack, provided the perfect backdrop without overwhelming the conversation.

Our appetizers were a triumph of flavor and texture. The Calamari Fritti, accompanied by two delectable dipping sauces, set the tone for the evening. This was followed by the pork and beef meatballs—tender and succulent, bathed in a superb arrabbiata sauce—and the Panzanella, featuring Campari tomatoes drizzled with a balsamic glaze. Each dish was a testament to both culinary expertise and a deep appreciation for Italian gastronomy.

For the main course, we shared the Chicken Milanese, elegantly presented with a lemon caper beurre blanc sauce, and the Penne Alla Vodka, which is delivered flamed, a dramatic flourish to its already remarkable taste. This pasta dish, in particular, stood out as one of the finest I’ve encountered in the Valley, though other menu highlights such as the Rigatoni Bolognese and Pasta Al Limone are equally deserving of praise.

By the end of our meal, indulgence had precluded any possibility of dessert, but the promise of future visits—eagerly anticipated—remains strong. Compliements to Executive Chef Santos Perez, Italica delivers not only on exquisite cuisine but also on exceptional service and a visually stunning environment. It’s clear that Roman and Skip have succeeded in creating a restaurant that is as delightful as it is memorable, and it is a welcome addition to downtown Indio’s culinary scene.

Italica is now open Thursday thru Saturday evenings. For more information visit: www.italica.bar.
