Korakia Pensione Celebrates 100 Years of Artistic Legacy in Palm Springs

In the heart of Palm Springs, the iconic Korakia Pensione marks its centennial, inviting guests to step into a century-long story of artistry and Mediterranean charm. Originally built in 1924 as Villa Dar Marroc, this Moroccan-inspired retreat was the brainchild of Scottish painter Gordon Coutts, who sought to recreate the essence of his beloved Tangier in the California desert.

Korakia, meaning “crow” in Greek, seamlessly blends Mediterranean and Moroccan influences across its 28 bungalows and guesthouses. With its signature keyhole doorway, whitewashed walls, and lush courtyards, the hotel has remained a haven for creatives and luminaries, from Rudolph Valentino to Winston Churchill. Today, it stands as a testament to timeless design and enduring hospitality under the stewardship of Auric Road, the boutique hospitality group behind other distinctive properties like Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach and Lone Mountain Ranch in Montana.

I have stayed at Korakia many times over the years and find the property to be one of the most unique properties in the Coachella Valley.

A Creative Legacy

Korakia’s history is as rich as its design. Coutts, enamored by the bohemian spirit of Tangier, brought its essence to Palm Springs, creating a retreat that became a magnet for Hollywood stars and artists. Today, six of Coutts’ original paintings adorn the hotel, preserving the artistic soul of the property. “My grandfather loved Moroccan architecture and wanted to recreate that environment here,” says Pamela Coutts Koust, his granddaughter. “It’s emotional to see how much this place means to the community and visitors alike. My 93-year-old mother, who grew up here, still cherishes her visits to the home.”

Luxurious Accommodations

Spread across serene grounds, Korakia’s 28 accommodations range from suites to standalone houses, each thoughtfully designed to evoke the romance of early 20th-century Marrakech or Corfu while embracing contemporary luxury. High-beamed ceilings, French doors, private patios, and buttery leather furnishings create spaces that are both nostalgic and modern.

The standout Auric House, a short walk from the main property, offers an exclusive experience for groups or families. This four-bedroom villa features a full kitchen, a freestanding bungalow, and a stunning edge-less pool, making it an ideal getaway for larger gatherings.

Culinary Delights

Korakia offers simple yet exquisite dining experiences. Breakfast is served in the courtyard, with options like huevos rancheros or fresh granola paired with a thermos of hot coffee delivered to your door—a small luxury that sets the tone for a leisurely day. Lunch and dinner are provided through a partnership with a local restaurant, featuring fresh, inventive dishes delivered to your room or poolside. The Moroccan Bar serves up craft cocktails and mocktails, including the must-try mezcal-based El Camino.

Wellness and Activities

Wellness is woven into the Korakia experience. Guests can enjoy morning yoga, sound baths, and guided hikes to nearby Tahquitz Canyon. In-room massages and treatments, including the signature Korakia massage, elevate relaxation to an art form. Complimentary bikes and a peaceful neighborhood setting make it easy to explore the surrounding Historic Tennis Club district, with downtown Palm Springs just a 10-minute walk away.

A Portal to Another World

Paulette Monarrez, Korakia’s General Manager, describes the hotel’s magic: “The moment you step through the archway, you’re transported to a different world. That’s what makes Korakia so special.”

As Korakia Pensione celebrates its 100th year, it remains a cherished retreat, offering an immersive escape steeped in history, beauty, and the enduring spirit of its artistic origins.
