Palm Springs Pride, a radiant kaleidoscope of unity, equality, and the strength of the LGBTQ+ community, will unfold its jubilant spectacle all weekend long. The festival will reverberate through the heart of downtown Palm Springs, adorning Palm Canyon Drive between Amado Road and Baristo Road, the streets surrounding the downtown park on Museum Way, and the Arenas district between Indian Canyon Drive and South Calle Encilia.
Four vibrant venues, each pulsating with energy, will serve as the stages for this year’s festivities. The Hornitos Main Stage, nestled on Palm Canyon Drive at Amado, will be a symphony of lights and music. The Community Stage, strategically located on Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way, promises a more intimate connection with the artists. Meanwhile, the Oscar’s Pride Stage on Tahquitz Canyon Way and Indian Canyon Drive and the KGAY / White Party Global Stage in the Arenas District at S. Calle Encilia will echo with the cheers of a diverse crowd, united in the spirit of Pride.
The artistic essence of this year’s celebration is encapsulated in the vibrant strokes of pop artist Trevor Wayne, the chosen poster artist for the 2023 Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival and Parade. Wayne’s commemorative Pride poster, a testament to acceptance and support, captures the journey of self-discovery. “I am thrilled and honored to be chosen to do the art for Palm Springs Pride this year,” Wayne exclaims. “I have so many friends who are professional drag queens, and I want to show my support.”
In a testament to the enduring legacy of drag culture, the 2023 Palm Springs Pride Parade is set to honor some of the most iconic figures in the industry. At the age of 91, James “Gypsy” Haake, one of the world’s oldest living drag queens, will be celebrated as the Grand Marshal, joined by the immensely talented Trixie Mattel and the vivacious Ethylina Canne, recognized as Celebrity and Community Grand Marshals respectively. Under the theme “Drag Now. Drag Forever,” these luminaries, with their remarkable drag artistry and significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, embody resilience amidst political turmoil and challenges faced by the drag community. Ron deHarte, President and CEO of Greater Palm Springs Pride, emphasized the importance of honoring drag queens from different generations, symbolizing unity and unwavering commitment to equality and acceptance.
James “Gypsy” Haake, who embarked on his entertainment journey on Broadway in 1951, continues to captivate audiences with his enduring charm and rich history in film, television, and cabaret. Alongside him, Trixie Mattel, the winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” season 3, stands tall for her significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, advocating for change and acceptance. Ethylina Canne, a stalwart in the industry since the mid-90s, not only dazzles audiences as an entertainer but also engages in substantial community work, notably through her monthly drag bingo event, “Ethyl’s Place,” which has raised over $30,000 for charitable causes. Together, these drag legends embody the spirit of Pride, reminding the world that the art of drag is a beacon of solidarity and empowerment for all.
This years headlining performer will be actress, singer, and Broadway sensation, Idina Menzel. The ‘Queen of Broadway’ will headline the festival Saturday November 4th.
Other musicians performing will be Lisa Lisa, The Gand Band and 10,000 Maniacs to name a few.
Palm Springs, a cherished sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, stands as a beacon of acceptance in these transformative times. This year’s parade, featuring over 200 vibrant contingents, will kick off at 10 a.m. on November 5, embarking on a radiant journey along Palm Canyon Drive, starting at Tachevah and culminating in a crescendo of jubilation.
