When she moved here in early 2019 from NY, Anne Bedrick dreamed of being part of a vibrant art community with a gallery fronted studio adjacent to other artists. Disheartened by a fully rented Backstreet Art District in Palm Springs, Bedrick’s journey took an unexpected turn towards the Perez Art District near Downtown Cathedral City.
Initially a faded echo of its former artistic glory, the Perez Art District lacked visibility despite Cathedral City’s claim that it is “Where Art Lives.” With only three galleries participating in the first year, Bedrick took charge, spearheading monthly art walks and leveraging social media to unveil the district’s hidden potential.
Over four years, even amid the challenges of the pandemic, Bedrick tirelessly worked to bring attention to the Perez Art District. Her commitment also extended beyond her studio, as she immersed herself in the larger art community, leading initiatives initially for the Artists Council and later, with three others, founding the highly anticipated Desert Open Studios tour.
The transformation of The Perez Art District is undeniable. From a handful of artists in 2019 to over 40 in 2023, Bedrick’s dream is materializing. The monthly art walks now draw in hundreds of visiting and local enthusiasts and collectors, turning the once overlooked district into a burgeoning destination.
Bedrick reflects on the journey, stating, “It’s hard to believe I had to convince artists to come here, and now there’s a waitlist for studios!” The monthly art walk, held on 4th Fridays @ 4:00 (until 7 pm), has become an immersive experience for art lovers, showcasing diverse disciplines such as painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.
If you are an art enthusiast seeking a diverse and eclectic experience, the Perez Art District is the place to go. Edgy creativity and innovation define this vibrant district, which showcases many talented artists from around the country and with very diverse backgrounds. Apart from Bedrick, notable artists include Gustaf Rooth, Barbara Boissevain, Kippi Leonard, and others, spread across the district’s A, C, H, and I buildings. Conveniently located at 68845 Perez Rd in Cathedral City, California, the Perez Art District has become a haven for creativity.
The 68929 building, also in the district, is home to unique home stores and galleries. From At Hom to Object Culture, these spaces, have unique items and occasionally host visiting artists, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
The Perez Art District has not only revived but has become a thriving hub for artistic expression, welcoming both locals and tourists into its reinvigorated fold.
