A Legacy of Giving: Auen Foundation Helps Bring Plaza Theatre Back to Life

Sherrie S. Auen

The historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs is one step closer to its grand reopening thanks to a significant $250,000 donation from the Auen Foundation, a Coachella Valley-based private grant-making foundation dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults.

In recognition of the gift, the theatre’s mezzanine level will be named the Auen Mezzanine, ensuring patrons will see the foundation’s commitment to the community each time they attend a performance. The contribution helps move the Plaza Theatre Foundation closer to its capital campaign goal as it works to raise the remaining $6 million needed to complete the extensive restoration of the beloved venue.

“The Auen Foundation is proud to support the Plaza Theatre Foundation as a founding donor in the restoration of this cultural treasure in the heart of Palm Springs,” said Sherrie Auen, Trustee of the Auen Foundation. “This transformative project will bring people of all ages together to enjoy performances and shared experiences, while ensuring this iconic space remains vibrant for generations.”

The Plaza Theatre, built in 1936, has a rich history as a venue for film premieres, radio broadcasts, and live performances, including the long-running “The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.” Closed since 2014, the theatre is undergoing a comprehensive renovation to address infrastructure needs, install modern theatrical equipment, and ensure ADA compliance, preparing it to once again serve as a cultural hub for Palm Springs residents and visitors.

“With this incredible gift, the Auen Foundation is directly contributing to the cultural enrichment of our community,” said J.R. Roberts, President of the Plaza Theatre Foundation. “We are honored to work with this respected foundation, which has helped improve the quality of life for so many.”

The Auen Foundation was established in 1992 by Sherrie and Ronald M. Auen, who believed in the power of community and the importance of supporting programs that benefit aging adults and their families. The foundation has awarded more than 1,000 grants, with Sherrie Auen continuing the mission as trustee and program director following Ron’s passing in 2019.

The restored Plaza Theatre is set to reopen in early December 2025, with a star-studded lineup that kicks off with Lily Tomlin on December 2 and 3 under the management of Oak View Group. Tickets for the inaugural season are now on sale at www.palmspringsplazatheatre.com.

For those interested in supporting the restoration, naming opportunities remain available. To learn more about contributing, contact J.R. Roberts at (760) 218-6330 or info@psplazatheatre.org. Additional details on the project and ways to give can be found at SaveThePlazaTheatrePS.org.
