A New Canvas in Cathedral City: Kathleen Strukoff Opens Desert Modern Gallery

A few weeks ago, I sat down with artist Kathleen Strukoff at the Palm Springs Vintage Market, where she serves as artist-in-residence, to talk about her work and evolving creative path.

Strukoff’s artistic sensibility traces back to her childhood in New Mexico, where she first began painting landscapes. Today, that early fascination with beauty, particularly in architecture, light, and sense of place has evolved into a distinctive body of work that reimagines the iconic midcentury modern aesthetic of Palm Springs and the surrounding desert communities. Her paintings are vibrant and expressive, capturing not just structures, but the mood and personality of the spaces she depicts.

That vision has found a new home with the opening of Desert Modern Gallery, her gallery and studio located in Cathedral City’s Perez Art District. The space is a collaboration with fellow artist Erich Meager and reflects a shared creative perspective, while also giving Strukoff a more personal, dedicated environment to showcase her work. Prior to this, she worked out of Kee Gallery, a collaborative space she co-owned with Meager and Ernesto Ramirez.

Her journey to becoming a full-time artist was not a conventional one. Armed with an MBA from the University of New Mexico, Strukoff initially followed a different professional path. It was her frequent visits to Cathedral City to spend time with her mother that ultimately led to a permanent move to Palm Springs in 2020, an experience that immersed her in the region’s architecture, energy, and creative community, and helped shape the direction of her work.

At the core of Strukoff’s paintings is an ability to translate more than just the physical structure of midcentury design. Her work conveys atmosphere and emotional connection, using bold color palettes and expressive compositions to transform familiar homes and buildings into something deeply personal and interpretive.

Education and community engagement also play a significant role in her practice. She has been actively involved with the Palm Springs Modernism Committee, particularly through the Building Educational Architectural Models (BEAM) program, which introduces students to the intersection of art, architecture, and design. Through hands-on painting sessions, she helps students build both technical skills and creative confidence.

Commissioned work is another meaningful aspect of her business. Strukoff frequently creates custom paintings of clients’ homes, often commissioned as personal or surprise gifts. These projects require not only artistic interpretation, but a certain level of discretion when gathering reference materials.

At the Palm Springs Vintage Market, her role as artist-in-residence extends beyond her own work. She paints scenes of fellow vendors’ booths, capturing the unique character and energy of the market. These smaller pieces reflect the lively, colorful spirit of the space and offer visitors another way to connect with the experience.

In addition to her studio practice, Strukoff continues to teach art classes and workshops, encouraging students at all levels to embrace their individuality and develop their own visual voice.

With the opening of Desert Modern Gallery, Strukoff enters an exciting new chapter, one that feels fully aligned with her artistic identity. Through her work, she not only celebrates the architectural beauty of the desert, but invites viewers to see it through a more personal, expressive, and vividly colored lens.
