Lily Tomlin, Jane Lynch, and a $1M Donation: The Plaza Theatre’s Spectacular Revival

A beloved cultural landmark is making its grand return. After an extensive $26.3 million renovation, the historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs is set to reopen this December, marking a new chapter in its storied legacy. Leading the lineup of inaugural performances are two of Hollywood’s most celebrated entertainers—Lily Tomlin and Jane Lynch—bringing their signature wit and charm to an eager audience.

A Storied Past, A Bright Future

Since its debut in 1936, the Plaza Theatre has been a beacon of entertainment in the heart of Palm Springs. It first made history as the site of the world premiere of Camille, where its enigmatic star Greta Garbo reportedly slipped in unnoticed after the lights dimmed. Over the decades, the theatre has hosted everything from star-studded film premieres to nationally broadcast radio programs featuring legends like Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, and Amos ‘n’ Andy. Palm Springs icons Frank and Nancy Sinatra also graced its stage, and for nearly 25 years, it was home to the beloved Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.

Yet, even icons need rejuvenation. After sitting dark since 2014, the theatre is undergoing a meticulous transformation under the leadership of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, in partnership with Oak View Group and the City of Palm Springs. More than just a renovation, this is a renaissance—one that honors its rich past while propelling it into the future as a world-class entertainment destination.

Restoring the Magic

The ambitious restoration blends historic preservation with modern innovation. Master artisans are carefully reviving the theatre’s original 1936 decorative stenciling, while a newly expanded lobby will enhance the guest experience. Upgraded seating, state-of-the-art climate control, and modernized dressing rooms ensure that both audiences and performers will enjoy the theatre at its best.

Beyond its cultural impact, the revitalization of the Plaza Theatre is expected to bring significant economic benefits to downtown Palm Springs. City officials anticipate the venue will generate an annual economic impact of $40 million, adding between $2 million and $4 million in tax revenue. Mayor Ron deHarte hails the reopening as a transformative moment for the city: “This isn’t just about bringing world-class talent to Palm Springs—it’s about creating a thriving hub for arts and culture that will drive tourism and support our local businesses.”

A New Era Begins

John Bolton, Vice President and General Manager of the Theatre said “We are thrilled to offer a sneak peek of our inaugural season. These initial 10 shows spotlight the Plaza Theatre’s ability to host world-class entertainment.

Additionally The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation has received a major boost in its restoration efforts, thanks to a generous $1 million donation from Brad Prescott through the Prescott Foundation.

Beyond this initial contribution, Prescott has issued a challenge to the Foundation: if they can raise an additional $1 million, he will match every dollar, potentially adding another $2 million to the project and bringing the total fundraising impact to $3 million.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about Brad Prescott’s incredible generosity in helping to restore the Plaza Theatre,” said J.R. Roberts, President of the Plaza Theatre Foundation board. “Brad isn’t just a friend—he and The Prescott Foundation are true champions of preservation, already safeguarding over 130 acres of open space, including the Prescott Preserve. Now, with this remarkable matching challenge, he’s doubling down on his commitment to protecting history. I welcome the opportunity to meet with anyone ready to help match this transformative gift.”

Prescott, known for his passion for land conservation, sees historic preservation as equally important. “It’s an honor to support the Plaza Theatre restoration—not just for the theatre itself, but for the people of Palm Springs,” he said. “While my focus has always been preserving open space for future generations, I’ve come to realize that saving historic architecture is just as vital. I’m proud to stand with J.R. and the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation in bringing this landmark back to life.”

As the Plaza Theatre prepares to raise its curtain once more, it stands as a testament to Palm Springs’ enduring commitment to the arts. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, this is your invitation to be part of history. The stage is set, the lights are ready—let the show begin.
